Moonglowers Jazz Festival at SPFHS (Photos)

Scotch Plains-Fanwood High School hosted its 20th annual Moonglowers Jazz Festival on April 21, featuring performances by the school's Jazz Lab, SPF Jazz and Moonglowers plus eight ensembles from seven other schools.

Click here to see our album of photos from the finale performance by the Moonglowers. It came on the eve of the New Jersey Association of Jazz Education's state finals, in which the Moonglowers took second place among groups from Division II schools.

SPFHS Music at Memorial Day Parade 2016

The SPFHS music program was well represented as always at the annual Memorial Day ceremonies in downtown Scotch Plains and the parade from there to downtown Fanwood. Here is an album of photos including the Marching Band, the choral group singing America the Beautiful, and the Rhythmsense float.

SPFHS Jazz and The Moonglowers provided entertainment as the district's music community came together to benefit the Bridge family. The event was held May 13 at the Scotch Plains Italian-American Club.

Marching Band is starting its 2015 season

The SPFHS Raiders Marching Band and Color Guard gave a sneak preview of its 2015 show to parents and friends on Sept. 3.

The band will play at Raiders Football games, starting Sept. 12 at Plainfield, and in a series of USBands Group 6-Open competitions, also starting Sept. 12 at Edison HS.

SPFHS Musicians in Memorial Day Parade 2015

As a reprise to their award-winning season, the Raiders Marching Band and Color Guard took part in the annual Scotch Plains-Fanwood Memorial Day parade on May 25.

In addition, members of the school choir sang "God Bless America" at the opening ceremonies in downtown Scotch Plains. And Rhythmsense performed on a float as the final musical group in the line of march.

Moonglowers take NJAJE Division II State Championship

The Moonglowers won the New Jersey Association for Jazz Education's Division II State Championship on April 25 in Princeton.

The group also won the award for best saxophone section.

SPFHS Music trip to Washington a big success

The Scotch Plains-Fanwood High School Music Department's traveled to Washington in April to take part in a “Festivals of Music” competition. The musicians picked up many "excellent" and "superior" ratings, and two ensembles were best-in-show in their categories: the Men's Choir, which was named Best Overall Choir, and the Moonglowers, honored as Best Overall Jazz Ensemble.

Moonglowers Jazz Festival 2015: Photos

SPFHS hosted the 18th Annual Moonglowers Jazz Festival on March 27. The show featured performances by SPF Jazz, by visiting ensembles from J.P. Stevens, Westfield, Carteret and Bridgewater-Raritan High Schools, and finally by the host band.

Day of Percussion 2015 - The videos

From the Raider News channel, we now have videos of performances at Day of Percussion, held March 7 at Terrill Middle School.

Terrill Middle School hosted the Scotch Plains-Fanwood Schools ninth annual Day of Percussion on Saturday, March 7, featuring performances by eight ensembles plus clinics presented by music professionals.

Here's an album of photos by Dan Murphy of all the performing groups, the clinicians and the vendors, prizes and other activities.

SPFHS Winter Pops Concert 2015 (Video)

The SPFHS Music Department put on its winter Pops Concert on Jan. 28. Thanks to Sam Zhu, we have several videos to share.

The first three feature the SPFHS Wind Ensemble. First, a medley of music from "Les Miserables."

Next, the "Beauty and the Beast Suite."

The next number is called "The Chimes of Freedom."

The next two videos feature the SPFHS Symphonic Band. First, a medley of "Tchaikovsky's Greatest Hits."

Also by the Symphonic Band, music from "Pirates of the Caribbean."

SPF's annual Day of Percussion coming soon

The Scotch Plains-Fanwood Public Schools music department will be hosting its annual Day of Percussion on March 7. This year's event will be at Terrill Middle School, running from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. It will feature professional musicians putting on instructional clinics, performances by percussion ensembles from SPF and other New Jersey schools, plus refreshments and vendors selling and demonstrating musical merchandise.

SPFHS District Jazz Night 2014 - Photos

The Moonglowers, the Tuesday and Thursday Jazz Labs and SPF Jazz were among the groups that performed at the District Jazz Night on May 19 at the high school auditorium.

The jazz bands from Park and Terrill Middle Schools also performed, demonstrating that plenty of talented musicians will be moving up as the current high school classes move on.

Spring Instrumental Concert 2014 - Photos

Seven SPFHS instrumental groups took part in the annual Spring Instrumental Concert at the Manya Unger Auditorium on May 14.

These photos by Dan capture performances by five of the groups. Unfortunately, we don't have photos from the last two - SPF Jazz and Wind Ensemble - and welcome contributions from anyone who took pictures of those performances.

Rhythmsense performs 'Short Circuits' at 2014 Spring Concert - Video

To open the SPFHS Spring Instrumental Concert on May 15, 2014, members of Rhythmsense performed "Short Circuits" by Lalo Davila. See why the piece is described as "a blacklight ensemble."

Moonglowers win 2014 state finals - Video

The SPFHS Moonglowers won first place at the New Jersey Association for Jazz Education's 2014 Division II state finals on April 26. Watch the winning performance here:

The Alternative Press published an article that noted the Moonglowers are now 12-time state champions.

The article also said the group won all six competitions in which it participated this year. “It was the hard work and dedication of the Moonglowers that achieved their success throughout the year,” Vincent Turturiello, director of the group and SPFHS supervisor of fine arts, told The Alternative Press.

Festivals of Music 2014 in Virginia Beach: Photos

The various SPFHS instrumental and choral groups and Winter Guard took part in a Festivals of Music competition in Virginia Beach on April 4-5.

Thanks to parent Erica Karakis, we have an extensive set of photos covering the performances - including the great shot above, of a light moment during a choral performance.

Rhythmsense makes television appearance - Photos

The Rhythmsense percussion group traveled to Staten Island on April 1 to tape a performance for "Mallet's Place TV," a public-access television show seen on Time Warner Cable in both New York and Los Angeles.

The show is hosted by Jason “Malletman” Taylor, a frequent guest at SPFHS Day of Percussion. After his performance this past February, he invited the group to be guests on his show.

Here are some photos of the group in the "green room" before the show and on the set. We hope to get access to video, too.

SPF Jazz Festival 2014 - Photos

Three of our high school jazz bands took part in the Fourth Annual SPF Jazz Festival on Feb. 28, joined by bands from four other schools.

The guest bands were Monroe Township Middle School's Falcon Jazz Ensemble; the Westfield High School Stage Band; the Bridgewater-Raritan High School Tuesday Band; and the J.P. Stevens High School Jazz Lab Band.

They were joined by SPFHS Monday and Thursday Jazz Lab bands, with the SPF Jazz Band closing out the show.

We have an album of photos taken by Dan of the SPFHS Thursday Jazz Lab and SPF Jazz. As always, we welcome contributions from other photographers -- especially shots of the Monday Jazz Lab's performance.
