School board honors state-champion Marching Band

The Scotch Plains-Fanwood Board of Education adopted a resolution Nov. 21 recognizing the SPF High School Raider Marching Band for its "epic" competitive season this fall and its state championship.


Board president Norman "Trip" Whitehouse, superintendent of schools Dr. Margaret Hayes and district art & music supervisor Vincent Turturiello spoke to congratulate the student musicians, the staff and the parents for all their hard work and achievements.

A personalized copy of the resolution was prepared for each band member and presented to the section leaders to distribute.

Marching Band finishes a great season at Nationals (Photos & Video)

The SPFHS Marching Band concluded its 2013 competition season with a fine performance of its program, "Beyond the Clouds," at the USSBA Nationals event Nov. 9 at MetLife Stadium. The band won the Cadet's Award of Excellence and placed third in the USSBA judging for Group VI-A with the caption award for Best Effect.

The next-to-last competition of the season for the SPFHS Marching Band was the USSBA Nationals Preview show at Union High School on Nov. 2.

Senior Recognition Day for Class of 2014

Senior members of the Marching Band, Color Guard, cheerleading squad and football team were honored at Tyson Field on Saturday, Oct. 26. Band parents Dev Anjaria and Cimi Sivaneri took photos of our senior band and guard members and their family members as they were introduced on the field before that day's football game.

SPFHS Marching Band Takes 2013 State Title

The SPFHS Marching Band took first place in Group IV-A at the USSBA New Jersey State Championship competition on Oct. 19 at Rutgers University's football stadium.

In addition the first-place trophy, our students took the caption awards for Best Music, Best Overall Effect and Best Color Guard. Congratulations to all, and good luck with the year's remaining competitions!

Marching Band competes at South Plainfield - Photos

The marching band achieved its highest score so far this season in competition at South Plainfield HS on Saturday.


It was the first of two competitions for the band that day. A few hours later, the students performed at Hillsborough HS. (See photos and video from Hillsborough.)

Marching Band at Yamaha Cup 10/5/2013 - Photos

The marching band made its first of two appearances this year at MetLife Stadium on Oct. 5, performing in USSBA's annual Yamaha Cup competition.

It was another busy Saturday for the SPFHS Marching Band, as it presented its halftime show at the football Raider's home game and then went to Piscataway to perform in competition.

2013 Marching Band Season Begins: The Preview Show

Concluding a very productive summer of learning and rehearsing, the SPFHS Raider Marching Band & Guard presented a preview of its 2013 program for family and friends on Aug. 29.

The students put on a marching performance and then repeated the music in stand-still formation. Here's an album of photos by Dan Murphy and Jennifer Cherubini.



The show will make its public debut on Sept. 21 at a Raiders home football game in the afternoon. That evening, the band will host a USSBA competition and perform in exhibition.

Memorial Day 2013: Singing at ceremony, marching in parade (More photos added 6/6)

SPFHS musicians sang at the Memorial Day ceremonies in downtown Scotch Plains and then the Raiders Marching Band took part in the annual parade to downtown Fanwood.

Here's an album of photos that starts with members of the choir singing the National Anthem and follows the band and color guard along the parade route. There are also a couple of shots of Rhythmsense on a float.

In this video, the band steps off at the start of the parade in downtown Scotch Plains, and later marches into downtown Fanwood.

Disney Trip 2013: Videos (Updated 12/15/13)

We're building our collection of videos from the SPFHS Music 2013 trip to Disney World.

Here are three videos of the Marching Band in the Magic Kingdom Parade. The first shows two views of the band marching and playing on Main Street in the rain. The second shows the parade from the opposite side of the street. And the third shows the band marching through a gate at the start of the parade - while they were still dry!







Next, thanks to the Tice family, two clips of the Symphonic Band performing on the Waterside Stage in Downtown Disney.

SPFHS Musicians Take Disney World by Storm (Updated 6/6)

More than 300 SPFHS musicians took part in this year's music department trip to Disney World. The Marching Band took part in the park's nightly parade down Main Street in the Magic Kingdom and the school's various instrumental and choral groups performed at venues around the park.

The weather was rainy on and off, but as seen above, the students soldiered on - and park goers warmly greeted their performances.

Rep Theater presents "The Wedding Singer"

SPFHS Rep Theater is presenting a very entertaining production of "The Wedding Singer" at the high school auditorium.

Here's an album of photos of the wonderful cast in performance on the first weekend. Thanks to Rich Buchanan and Erica Karakis for these great shots!



Remaining performances are on March 14 at 7 p.m. and March 15 and 16 at 8 p.m.

To promote the show, the Rep Theater gang put together this video, lip-synching to "The Power of Love" by Huey Lewis and the News.

Day of Percussion, 2/16/2013 (Updated)

SPFHS held its annual Day of Percussion on Feb. 16, 2013 (postponed one week by a blizzard). Student ensembles from Spiffy High, Terrill Middle School, Randolph Middle and High Schools and Montville High School performed, and professional musicians Dennis DeLucia, Pat Petrillo, Dave Samuels and John Riley ran clinics. The halls outside the auditorium were filled with vendor tables and Music Boosters volunteers running a raffle and food service.



"We wanted to give the students an opportunity to see products from percussion companies and also get a chance to watch some clinics by professionals from the various areas from the world of percussion," said Mr. Reo, who planned the event along with Mr. Jackson. "As the event has grown, we’ve been able to have table displays where students can meet with and talk to percussionists from a wide variety of backgrounds. ... I look forward to seeing what will happen with the Day Of Percussion in future years."

Spiffy Jazz takes the stage at Jazz Fest

Do you hear the students sing? Cabaret Night 2013

Cabaret Night at the SPFHS auditorium was a big success, as a packed house listened to choral and solo performances of songs from stage and screen. Here's a brief video clip of the last chorus of the medley from Les Miserables that closed the show.

Coming up: Pops Concert, Day of Percussion, Caberet Night

The SPFHS Pops Concert, featuring the school's various instrumental ensembles, is coming up this week, on Wednesday, Jan. 30 at 7:30 p.m. To get in the mood, have a look back at some photos and video clips of last year's show.

On Saturday , Feb. 9, our school will host its annual Day of Percussion, featuring performances by percussion ensembles from SPFHS and several other schools, plus clinics by four outstanding performers and educators. See this flyer for more details.

And Wednesday, Feb. 13, will be Cabaret Night in the high school auditorium, starting at 7:30 p.m. Come hear a variety of music from musicals, movies and more. There will be many solo performances in addition to choral arrangements of selections from Irving Berlin, Thoroughly Modern Millie and Les Miserables.
